Down to the Bare Bones

December was a lousy month for EasySaver Rebates at Walgreens. I earned a measly $4.40 which has long since been spent.

I have no Walgreens Register Rewards.

At CVS, I spent almost all my ECB's on diapers and laundry detergent last week. I still have $3.99. No CVS gift card.

My Rite Aid gift card only has $3.72 left on it.

And I have a LOT of shopping to do. We need mostly grocery items, but there's a few other things that are just too good to pass up this week.

There are some great sales at Kroger and Brookshire's that will help a little, but don't be surprised if you see a lot of out-of-pocket flying through my blog.

I also intend to check out more Target & Old Navy clearance tomorrow for clothes for my kiddos.

I Am So Easily Swayed...

Did you read my post last week about the ethical dilemmas in Coupon Land?

Jenny at Southern Savers has a new post on the subject of combining E-coupons and paper coupons. I was quite surprised to see this different perspective, but I wholeheartedly agree. These companies are too sophisticated to not figure out a way to let us choose paper or electronic coupon at checkout or just automatically remove the electronic one when we use a paper coupon.

Today's topic? Registries.

Some people think registries are they're own personal shopping list, some people think they're incredibly offensive and greedy.

Here's my 2 cents as both a gift-receiver and a gift-giver: Registries are a useful tool to convey the overall tone of personal tastes and an idiot-proof guide for the clueless. That doesn't mean you should go overboard scanning everything in the store--ahem, Dads.

The following is a list of items you should register for:

Changing:

Diapers--There's a reason this is first, you need lots! Register for all sizes Newborn through 5-6. I think Pampers Swaddlers and Pampers Cruisers are the best, but every child is different.

Wipes--Ditto on needing lots. My favorite is actually the Wal-Mart Parent's Choice unscented or the Playskool Cottony Cloths at CVS. They're thick and durable--right where you need something to be thick ;)

Ointments--A&D works great for prevention of rashes, and choose another for healing like Desitin Creamy or Boudreaux's Butt Paste

Diaper Bag--It's handy to have two of these. Little pockets and compartments are great.

Travel Wipes Cases--At least 2

Changing Pad--Get the sturdy one-piece style. We had a two piece foam insert kind with our first child and it was horrific.

Changing Pad Covers--At least 2, so you can wash the poopy one. Trust me.

Bathing:

Hooded Towel--You can get by with 1-2 of these. My daughter has the one pictured and I LOVE IT! So plush and absorbant. ($14.99 at Babies R Us--It was a little bit of a splurge but worth every cent!)

Washcloths--5-10

Baby Wash--Johnson's Head to Toe is a classic

Hygiene kit--Brush, comb, nail clippers, etc.

Medicine:

Mylicon--for gassiness

Tylenol--for fever & pain

Orajel--for teething

Saline nose drops--for stuffiness

Feeding:

A lot of this depends on whether you're breastfeeding or bottle feeding.

Breastfeeding moms need:

Breastpads--Johnson's in the blue box is my favorite.

Breast Pump--Depends on your situation and how much you'll be pumping. I have pumped maybe a dozen times with three kids. I had a cheapie little manual one and it turned out to be faster and more effective to just use my hand. If you'll be working full-time though, you will most likely need an electric double pump. Unfortunately, the more the cost, the better they usually are. Also unfortunate, most friends and family aren't going to buy a breast pump.

Lanolin Cream--Lansinoh is the most popular brand. Start using this a few weeks before your due date to condition your nipples--they'll thank you for it later.

Formula Fed Babies Need:

Formula--Talk to your doctor about this one.

Bottles--More is not always better. Sometimes it's just more to wash and pile up. I'll tell you more about my favorite bottle later.

Gear:

I recommend that "gear" like car seats and playards be gender neutral if you're planning on having more children.

Stroller System--We have the infant seat that snaps into a base in the car or into the stroller. The stroller can also be used independently, and it has cup holders, compartments, and great storage underneath. If you have two cars, an extra base is a great idea.

Convertible Car Seat--You can use these right from birth, but I prefer the infant carrier mentioned above for the first several months. After your baby is too big to tote around in a carrier or stays awake for longer periods, a rear-facing seat is needed. After the first year, you can face it forward. Around age 3, it can adjust to a booster.

Baby Containers--These are the swings, the bouncy seats, the jumperoos, the exersaucers, etc. Your baby will like some and not others, and you won't know which until you already own it. Go ahead and pick a few that you like personally.

Playard--Most moms put one of these in their room for the baby to sleep in for the first few months. Then it's great for playtime as they get bigger. Also makes a great travel bed for toddlers.

Wearable Carrier--You can use a wrap or a harness style.

Nursery:

I am pretty unconventional when it comes to the nursery. The only "Baby" furniture in my Bebe Girl's room is the crib. I used two microwave carts in my nurseries. One served as a changing table and I used the other for storage and some pretty display items.

Crib--It's a good idea to get a convertible crib to get more use out of it as a toddler bed and beyond. I also chose one with a trundle drawer for blanket or toy storage.

Bedding--Everybody wants it to be pretty. But before you spend $100's, think about this: Your sweet baby is a little ball of bodily functions. This beautiful bedding will get pee and poo and puke on it. The can't even use the comforter until they're older. Large chains like Wal-Mart and Target have very reasonably priced bedding sets that are super cute and durable. You can also go the "A La Carte" route and register for just the pieces you want. For my oldest son, we only had the bumper and the sheet, whereas my daughter has the whole kit & kaboodle.

Waterproof Mattress Pads--At least two, for when the diapers don't hold it all in.

Sheets--At least two for the same reason.

Blankets--Register for blankets of different weights and breathability. You'll need thin ones, heavy ones, swaddling ones, snuggling ones. And people love buying cute blankets.

Swaddling Wrap--OK, I never had one. I always used receiveing blankets. I'm a PRO swaddler, but it's an artform and not everyone can do it. Newborn babies love being snug-as-a-bug-in-a-rug, and this will help them wake less. That's always nice when you're sleep-deprived.

Burp Cloths--Pretty ones or the plain Gerber cloth diapers work the same. You'll need several.

Here are some items I think you can live without:

Bottle Warmers--Ever heard of a bowl of hot water? (They say not to microwave because of "Hot Spots". I do it anyway.)

Wipes Warmers--What happens when they're used to the warm wipe and you don't have it when you're out and about? I've heard they don't stay warm by the time you get it to the booty anyway.

Diaper Genie--I had one with my first child and just didn't feel like it contained the smell enough to warrant $5 refills.

Baby Sling--I wanted this sooo bad and it absolutely killed my shoulder. The buckle was in the wrong place and it always seemed like she was upside down no matter how I adjusted it.

Special Breast-feeding Shirts--Too complicated for ease of use.

Pacifiers--Not that you won't probably use them, but your baby will probably have a preference. Wait until you know what they like or if they like them at all.

Where should you register?

Wal-Mart--Great for in-store and on-line. Has a pretty lax return policy. Registry is very user-friendly.

Target--Super cute stuff. Difficult return policy. They cycle through merchandise quickly, so if you register early in your pregnancy, some items may be gone by the time people are buying gifts. They send out coupons :D

Babies R Us--The best selection. The best one-on-one service. Somewhat lenient return policy, especially with a registry. Not the best prices.

I don't suggest registering for clothing or toys. Those items are usually more difficult to find on a registry and people just want to buy you what they think is cute anyway.

I am all about practicality and getting the most for your money. That doesn't mean I'm cheap and won't buy quality items.

When I had my first two children just 18 months apart, I searched high and low for the perfect double stroller. I wanted a jogger style with side-by side seats and it had to have a swivel front wheel. When I found it, I plunked $180 down and I've never once regretted it. It was heaven-sent and I have gotten many, many miles out of it.

Of course, this list is not exhaustive, and, as I continue this series, I'll focus on some specific items. I may even throw in a "VLOG". Whatcha think?

Oh Baby! 1

In the last few years, my life has become a parade of pregnant women and baby births. Between the birth of my oldest child and my youngest was a scant 3 years and 7 months. Collectively, I have been pregnant almost 32 months and I have breastfed 23 months. That's nearly five years with a child attached to me in some form or fashion!

And then there's the friends and family that keep popping 'em out! :)

I wouldn't call myself an expert (Yes, I would.), but there's much more that goes into having a baby than becoming pleasantly plump and "glowing".

I was warned not to buy one of those pregnancy books that tells you every bad thing that could happen, but I also wanted to be educated and aware of possiblities.

This book was informative, but non-threatening. My favorite feature is the "Week-by-Week" part. You & Dad can read a few pages each week and know exactly what's going on with your little one. The size of your baby is often compared to various foods, which is both tangible and a little fun as a nickname (Hey, how's the Grape today?). There are tips for preparing for a baby logistically, physically, and mentally, tips for Dad, questions for your doctor, and the labor & delivery chapter is very good.

My Bebe Girl got super sick last weekend and I've been tending to her all week. No time for blogging, but it sure didn't stop me from being a CVSing FOOL! LOL! I did lots and lots of transactions, mostly to stock up on diapers.

Then, I went to blogland today to check out what all I've been missing.

Oh. My. Goodness.

Have you read this post by The Thrifty Mama or this one by Mommy Snacks?

There are some serious ethical and moral issues being presented by these ladies. I really had to take a look in the mirror after reading these posts.

Basically, any CVS internet coupon is unauthorized unless it is found at CVS.com or e-mailed directly to you.

Additionally, when using Cellfire, PGEsaver, or Shortcuts.com, these "e-coupons" are intended to be used independently, not in conjunction with paper coupons.

As I said here, "As much as I will use coupons to my advantage, I will not purposefully deceive a merchant or participate in illegal activity. We must maintain our ethical and moral boundaries."

In my efforts to be a Proverbs 31 woman, I need to have "a strong character" and have the "trust of [my] husband". It is not worth saving a few cents if I cannot have those things.

Honest Scrap Award!

1. Blogging came very naturally to me on my personal blog. I felt creative. Expressive. Even, on occasion, witty. I find myself struggling a little with this blog because I'm overthinking each post.


2. I could not function without my cameras. I have an SLR, a digital, an APS, and a camcorder. I would really like to pursue a career in Photography when my kids are older.


3. I have to include chocolate in each and every day. The healthy version is a chocolate chip granola bar. I don't usually choose the healthy version.


4. I have worked in retail doing sales, administration, and merchandising. I LOVED the merchandising! Organizing products all day every day--BLISS!


5. I really really love my kids. But I'm not a "kid" person. They kinda get on my nerves.


6. I love to craft, especially scrapbook, but I always have a moment of guilt: I take a beautifully pristine piece of colorfully printed paper with so much possiblity, and I cut it. It hurts me every time.


7. I have an issue with the whole "Quality vs. Quantity" thing. For the same amount of money, I would rather have 5 mediocre shirts than the one I love. It's a problem.


8. I hate washing dishes. HATE.


9. I never wanted own a minivan. Until I owned a minivan! It's wonderful! I have so much space, sliding doors absolutely ROCK, and the TV/DVD is fantastic. It's truly great.


10. I wanted to be Rainbow Brite when I grew up. So I am. I'm bringing COLOR back. :)

Menu Plan: January 4-11

The extent of my menu planning comes from times when the payday was short and the cabinets/refrigerator were getting bare. I would make a plan to utilize the items I had and make them go as far as I could.

My DH and I were discussing today the benefits of menu planning: more healthful meals, kinder to the budget, less last-minute stress and temptation to run out and "grab something".

I don't really know why I haven't jumped on board before, but here is my first attempt at Menu Planning. My husband works in retail, and closing shifts are 1pm to 11pm. I don't typically cook a family meal on those nights. I spoil indulge my boys with their favorites: pizza, mac & cheese, PBJ, etc.

My Coupon Region Stinks

Well, that title alone could be my post...

But I will explain. I never get all the coupons listed on a preview. I know that I will never get the Covergirl or Revlon coupons. I've never gotten a Pop-Tarts coupon in my paper. Garnier? No way! There are many others, and I just don't know what to expect most of the time.

There was no P&G insert at all in my local December 28th paper.

Yesterday, we only received 4 of the five inserts previewed.

I'm not just writing to complain, however. I want answers! Hopefully, answers some of you can give me! If I subscribe to a national paper, am I more likely to get all the inserts and coupons? What are some other solutions, besides Ebay & coupon clipping services?

REDBOX...A How-To

Do you keep reading about this "REDBOX" and wonder what-in-blogland we're talking about?

Wonder no more! Here is the lowdown:

REDBOX is a DVD rental machine. That's right--machine. No grouchy teenage cashiers, no making laps around a video store looking for the category your movie is in this week.

All of the REDBOX's in my area are at Wal-Mart. In other states, they may also be at Walgreens. Check for your nearest location here.

REDBOX offers movies for $1 per night per DVD plus local tax. Way better than $4.29 plus late fees if you keep it more than one night!

In all of their generosity, REDBOX occasionally provides promo codes for a FREE night's rental. You can get a FREE code by signing up for e-mails.

On Mondays, REDBOX releases a promo code via text messaging.

These promo codes are good for one night only and they can be used once per credit/debit card. This means that you can rent multiple movies as long as you have multiple cards. You must process separate transactions. You can use two different debit cards for the same bank account as long as they have different numbers on the card.

The REDBOX will authorize $1 to your card. As long as you return the movie by 9PM the next day, the hold will release and there will be no charge. If you keep the movie longer, you pay just $1 per night after the first.

New movies usually release on Tuesday and sometimes on Friday.

At REDBOX's website, you can find out what movies are in-stock at your local machines and even hold a movie at the machine (you must pay online for this option).

Here was my mistake (and the result of poor planning and too much procreation! LOL!) :

The 50% off of the second Olay Cleanser didn't come off until after all the coupons and ECB's. I had given the cashier too many ECB's at that point. It made my balance negative by $2.61. I knew the total seemed off, but I wasn't paying enough attention because my two-year-old has lost his mind. Usually if my balance comes up negative, it's just by a smidge and I'll get a candybar. Since the negative amount was more substantial, I wanted to use it for good. So I ran and got the Nasogel, which was not in my original scenario. (Yes, we could have voided the whole thing and redone it. Nothing wrong with that, I just didn't want to.) Basically, I'm out 95 cents for all this and I'll be getting a $15 gift card from Olay!

On Sundays in December, however, they were treating us with a code for a FREE rental. Although it's now January, they are giving us one last code.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll get the P&G insert this week, but it might have been a regional release that we're just not getting.***
